B.S.A Surplus Grading

Grading surplus goods involves assessing their condition, with specific criteria depending on the item. Sellers often use a number (1, 2, 3) grade, where the highest grade indicates like-new condition and lower grades indicate progressively more wear and tear. No universal standard exists, but we try to be as specific as possible of the actual condition.

Big Sky Arsenal uses the following grading system for military surplus items.

New/New Old Stock (NOS):

Unused, A+ Grade. These items are in pristine, near-perfect condition with little to no visible signs of use. They may be “new old stock,” meaning they were never issued or used but may have been in storage. They may be in original packaging or have their original tags attached. Some new items may have been stored for long periods of time and need to be washed.

    Grade 1 (Excellent):

These items may have been unissued with no signs of use, or they may have been issued but show minimal signs of use. Zippers, buttons, and colors are in excellent condition, with no major stains or holes.

        Grade 2 (Good/Very Good):

These items were used and show more noticeable signs of wear but are in good working condition. It may show minor cosmetic imperfections such as light scuffs, writing, fading, or small stains, but no major functional flaws. The material may be lightly faded, and stains may be present, but these items retain 100% of their initial functionality.

                  Grade 3 (Fair/Serviceable):

These items show signs of heavy use and are rated fair to serviceable. They may show more visible signs of use, such as stains, scratches, writing, fading, surface rust, or small holes. Seams may be frayed, and material may have small imperfections. Despite these imperfections, these items remain fully serviceable and retain their original functionality.

                        Grade D (Poor/For Parts):

These items are categorized as excessive use or salvage and represent the lowest quality grade. This is the lowest grade and includes items in poor condition with significant wear, damage, large stains, or broken components. They may not be suitable for their original use without minor or major repairs. These goods are typically sold for parts, upcycling, or recycling.
